One of the first Antares projects implemented at the Regional Orphanage was the "Student of the Month" Project. It was started in 2004 to encourage the 11th grade RBS students to study. The statistics of what happens to the children after they leave the orphanages are sad and alarming. What does it matter if we make good grades or not....Who cares?...many of the children in orphanages may wonder. The "Student of the Month" Project was designed to encourage the students to study; to give them motivation, as well as to let them know that someone cares! In addition to the monthly prizes, scholarships or financial aid have been awarded to some students to give them the opportunity to continue their education after graduating from the orphanage school.
Each month the "Best Student" in the 11th grade (That is as high as it goes there before college.) is awarded a prize. When we were in Kazakhstan in September we met with the students and asked what they would like for the prizes to be this year. They said MP3 players! They were all very motivated to do their best this year!
Picures of this year's winners will be posted soon!
